I'm a new homeowner, and have been able to pick up used versions of most appliances already (the only thing I needed to buy new was a pressure cooker). I'm grabbing used kitchen tools from thrift stores whenever possible - my thought is that not only are they cheap, but if they've lasted long enough to reach a thrift store, they must have been well built.
However, some things I just can't find in thrift stores: a mandoline, for the current frustrating example. Most of the relevant topics I've found searching are many years old, and I know brands can change - I've seen debates about Pyrex here on the sub, for example.
I'm interested in essentially everything that doesn't involve a power cord. Brands I'm currently leaning toward include Benriner, Pyrex (if they still make the older style - unsure here), and anything sold in a dedicated restaurant supply store (I'm near a large city, so are there any chains with especially good reputations?)
My budget is somewhat tight - I'm willing to spend for quality, but I'd like to stay with the least-expensive brands that will last.
