I've bought a vast array of second hand gadgets over the years and resell every one. I get a little consumerist buzz from the device for an hour and then usually it gets put away after a couple days. I've had numerous instruments, synthesisers, game devices, videogames, pebble watch, whatever, windows phone (lol) whatever. I don't have any that I have kept and used every day.

Good advice I can give, buy used flagships or 'tough' models and protect them. Flagship phones are easy to buy cheap and sell again for the same price in a couple years. Sell when the device is too old and slow, or broken. People WILL buy broken old flagship phones for a fair bit of money. I bought a budget Lenovo for 200, a Kindle Paperwhite for 40 and a S5 (and an otterbox) for 100. These have lasted me for 2 years and run great.

When I upgrade my gadgets when they get slow, by selling the old ones the upgrade costs me about $20.

Do not be tempted by the stupid shit your university age friends are buying. You don't need a 500 dollar smartwatch, smarthome, earbuds or 800 dollar phone. Its tempting to make excuses for getting them, oh there's warranty and trade ins and they will make my life better. They won't. Buy used, save your money, you will be happier than them with your smug sense of satisfaction at saving money.
