You'll pardon me if this is a recurring question in this thread. Feel free to direct me to a place where it's been answered already!

I think I need some help with my finances. They aren't all together too bad, I'm not in serious financial trouble or anything. I live in Eastern Canada, and have some debt I would consider pretty normal for age 33 - a morgatge, car loan, student loans, etc but I don't have any problem paying them or my other bills.

But I came to the realization the other day that my money should be going a lot farther than it does. I'm not good at saving, for retirement, for my taxes (I'm self employed), for travel, etc. I'm not good at paying down my debt. Yeah, I can pay my bills and that's great. but I feel like I make enough money that I should be able to be put more towards paying my debts off. I realize that I have a lot of bad habits in regards to spending and lack of saving, and it has occured to me that if I don't act now, I am likely to keep these bad habits for the rest of my life.

In short, I'm not great with my money and think I would really benefit from some professional guidance. Someone to look at my finances, income and spending in detail, and help me identify how I can better save, better spend, and maybe even grow some of my money.

My question is: what kind of service do I require? Do I need a financial advisor? An accountant? Wealth planner? Financial planner or analyst? I feel like I want to use an independant service, and not someone who is already employed by my financial institution.

Thanks in advance.
