I received a phone call yesterday from an unknown number but with a neighboring area code. Because I get so many scamming calls throughout the day, I dont answer unless it's a number I know, if they leave a voicemail, I call back. The voicemail was a female who stated I had a criminal complaint out of a county in alabama and i needed to give them a call and left a phone number with the same area code in alabama I am from. Instantly I began to shake. What the hell is this about? I havent lived there in over 4 years and I've lived a pretty boring life for a while now. I called the number back and a female answered she ran my phone number and was able to locate my information. She asked if my name was needsmoremayoyesterday? I said it used, my name changed to needsmoremayotoday when I got remarried. She asked if the last 4 of my social was four and I said yes and she said she needed to connect me to a compliance officer. I was placed on hold for a moment when a man came to the phone. He gave his name and said he was an attorney out of bumpkin county and a criminal complaint had been filed against me from a finance company from an account that was opened dec. 17 2012. He asked me what had happened. I knew at some point I had had a small loan from a finance company but my brain was flooded with panic and explained yes I did have a loan for $100 I had made payments but lost my job and didnt have the money to pay. I became a SAHM and didnt start working again until 3 years ago and honestly had forgotten about the loan except when I would see the finance companies name on my credit report. He told me the company was charging me with willful intent to defraud on a financial institution. I asked how much was owed, he says $256," the paperwork has not been filed I am giving you a chance to take care of it before I file, if I file you're going to have to show up for court and your property will be seized. I can delay it until 3 o'clock (it's now 2 o'clock in alabama). I explained to him, I dont get paid until next week and am not sure I'll be able to get the money in the next hour. He says well you might want to call in some favors. I say ok I'll see what I can do. He give me his info but not the name of the company hes with. A minute after I hang up, my daughters school called and I needed to pick her up from school. I tried to call some family and see if I could get a loan but was unable to reach anyone and as I was on the way to pick my daughter up my phone died and I was not able to call him before the hour had passed. While thinking about the conversation last night, I looked on credit karma, yes there was a loan taken october 2009 but the account is closed dec 17 2009 and the loan was for $275. 2 payments were made and the account, I lost my job in December and that's when the last payment had been made. I looked up statue of limitations in alabama, it says 6 years. I know there are many scams out there and I have heard of ones similar to this but what if it's not a scam? I looked up all the phone numbers that I have been provided and cannot find any listings for them.
