Pretty straightforward, in a lot of European countries and countries like Japan, you don't need a car to get around the country. I often see videos of these countries where people get along fine with a moped, electric bike, something like that and rarely use their cars.
Of course, its important to mention that in the US, we have states the size of countries. Even then, however, public transpiration in some places is abysmal. Making it hard to navigate to a lot of places. In Europe, you can get around fine with those bullet trains, or get up and down the coast of Japan with their train system. I suppose our train system is fine as well, but could be ggreatly improved.
When i was in Maryland, getting around Baltimore and the surrounding area was easy...until i needed to get back home to Columbia, then it was an all day affair of connecting the right buses. In Upper Marlboro, there aren't many buses and the nearest stop would be like a $10 lyft ride.
On the other hand, I'm in Charlotte right now, and the bus/light rail system is great, better than Baltimore, but if i wanted to get around to another city, it'd be similar to Baltimore.
I guess the answer is to simply move to a city with good transportation, get a good bike, and use one of those zipcar when i need to.
The idea of having a single car household sounds interesting to me when i'm older. Saving money and the environment!
