So, I had made a bad purchase, and got myself a lemon car 2 years ago. Well, it needed a ton of repairs and replacement and the cost was way too high to justify fixing it, considering I had issues non-stop 6 months after the purchase.
So yeah, I just got rid of it. I use the bus for work, the grocery store is 5 minutes of walk away and the pharmacy is 20 minutes of walk away (I have one 10 minutes closer so I'll probably switch pharmacy now that I will walk to it). I am NOT in a big urban city, but I am close enough to pretty much the main services I need (food and meds).
I will not be getting another car until I have paid off my debts fully. I think it will save me at least $5-6k+ per year. I hope I can have my debts paid in less than 2 years this way (I have ~12k of debts).
I just have to get myself a shopping rack with 2 wheels (whatever it's called) to transport bags and groceries and I'll be perfectly happy.
I won't be able to visit family by myself anymore, but I think I can deal with it and just live simplier for the time being. Not having a car will also prevent impulsive shopping. I dislike having to ask for lifts, but I hope I won't need to do it too often.
So yeah, no car for me for 2-3 years at a minimum I hope. I never expected to go carless ever, but the circumstances around it (not having the money or willingness to repair a lemon car) and the fact I have too much debts to get another car means I have to deal with it. I also have less unexpected purchases to plan for now so I should be able to focus on more important things (debts and then savings).
Thanks for reading. Did you guys also go carless for a while? forever?
