So I have been trying to reduce my monthly utility bills the past few months.
Last bill I wasn't so impressed but so far this month I have been.
My water bill came in at no use for the month. I get billed per thousand gallons so there was probably some left over from the month before and I didn't use a full thousand this bill .. which just left the fees which were about $20
In this past billing cycle for my Electric I saw it go from $95 to $49
This is because I lowered my thermostat from 68-70F on average down to 65F
I have been wearing thermal underwear and a zip up sweat jacket much of the day and haven't had any loss of comfort. However the last few days with the polar vortex I did raise the temperature 2 degrees so I might see less of a savings next time.
Haven't got the gas bill but I expect that if the electric dropped that much that the gas will drop right along with it because most of the electric I use is for the gas heater.
I don't know if I can continue this into the summer months but i hope to be able to do a few things including blowing about $300 worth of insulation in my attic in the spring which should give me an R60 and hopefully some other things might reduce my cooling needs this summer.
So does dropping your thermostat work?
Seems like it does.
