I woke up this morning to an email from Square saying that my account was logged into from Brazil. I did not use the link from the email, but went directly to square's website to reset my password. Upon logging in, there was a button to "Activate my card," implying that I had opened a new credit card. 2 things. I don't remember ever setting up this account in the first place (That doesn't really mean anything), and two, I certainly did not apply for a credit card through Square.
I deactivated the account, however I don't know if that will prevent a potential card from being activated. I then decided to log into Credit Karma where I had an alert that a mortgage lender had checked my credit on February 21st. Nope. I applied for an auto loan on the 22nd. Argh. I don't know if this is just a case of misinformation or if someone actually attempted to take out a loan in my name. It's also worth noting that this was part of an advertisement. They saw that I had supposedly been looking for a new mortgage, and offered rates from their advertisers. Regardless, I couldn't find any mention of an inquiry on my TransUnion or Equifax report, but the auto loan one did appear with the correct date and lender.
I've frozen my credit with all 3 of the major bureaus to be safe, but don't now what actions to take beyond this - if I need to take any further action.
