I've been working in a research/data analysis position at a university for the past 5 years. Our average yearly raise is about 1.5%. (I started at 70K and now make 74k).

I think my salary was fair when I first started because though I have a lot of education, I didn't have specific experience in my field. Now I have 5 years experience and I'm a very strong contributor. I know I'm the "go-to" person in my office for anything that needs to be done both quickly and correctly. However, there's virtually no room for advancement because all higher positions in my area are already filled by people with no apparent intentions of leaving, so I'm feeling somewhat stagnated in this position as well as pay level.

I've also been applying (selectively) to other universities to try to find a higher salary/better position. I had an interview yesterday, and I think I have a decent shot at an offer, but they said it would be 2 weeks until they could let me know.

So my thinking is, I should ask for a raise at my current job now. That way, I don't have to use the "nuclear" option of throwing an alternate job offer in their face/disclose that I applied elsewhere if they give me a raise to what the other position would offer. And if they say no to my request, if/when I get an offer, then I can come back with the offer and ask to get what I'm worth elsewhere. (I would also strongly consider taking this other position if offered, depending on the salary which I don't know yet).

I was thinking of asking for 87K (a raise of 13k, 17.6%). I looked up what people in comparative positions make at public universities, and I'm seeing around 85k or so. My thinking is, I don't want to ask for anything crazy, but I don't want to go too low because my university is apparently not in the habit of handing out raises, so this could be the last one I see for a while.

I want to ask tomorrow because only my boss and myself will be in the office, which is rare. So my main questions are (a) how do I bring this topic up, (b) what should be my major talking points, and (c) what topics should I definitely not mention, and (d) any thoughts on the dollar amount (17.5% more) that I mentioned above? Thanks!
