Every C-level at my (very large) company has pretty much been a lifelong member of the company. Our current CEO even started as a college intern. This is true for all large corporations I’ve worked for.
And yet, of every single young person I know (late 20s / early 30s) who is working hard at their career and aspires to the C-suite, probably less than 5% have stayed at one company. The most ambitious people I know hop every 2-3 years. It’s not because they want to, but because corporations just don’t promote from within anymore, and many openings with growth potentials go to external hires.
So I’m wondering — does the “executive track” or “corporate ladder” still exist? How are executives even planning for the future when they aren’t mentoring talent? Is anyone even talking about this or am I taking crazy pills?
Tl;dr: internal promotions barely exist anymore, so how do companies expect to find leaders in the future?
