First time I have done one of these things, so bear with me. I know it's easier for me to do the whole thing in imgur, but it crashed on my while I was writing descriptions and I do not have the patience to reupload all of the gifs into another post and start over. So here are individual gifs.
Smash the eyelets with a hammer. We do this because the rivets are too short to reach through the eyelets. And also because we are gonna smash the eyelets when we smash the rivets. (The first hole I did, I cut the eyelet out and just used the speed hook. This is an unnecessary step, so I stopped doing it. Learn from my mistake and do not bother. The hole that remains is too large for the rivet; you need to center it perfectly. This was my first try at this type of thing, and the whole project is a hack. But it worked.)
Assemble an speed hook and smash it with a rivet setter:
Another view of the assembly. Note that when you squeeze the parts together with your fingers, they will snap together and hold while you get ready to smash that shit.
Smash the rivet. Here is a good shot of the rivet smasher tool:
Shots showing the parts and the inside of the boots once complete:
A rivet has two parts, the cap and the post. The cap is the piece on the left. The post is on the right. The cap goes on the inside of the boot. If you put the cap on the outside you would have a hard time hitting the rivet because you'd need to lay the hook off to the side of your anvil.
Speaking of anvils. I obviously used a piece of railroad track that I picked up while they were building the light-rail in my town. Anything heavy and hard will work. This is not a precise operation. These are the tools I bought. And these are the rivets. I ordered them from China because I am FRUGAL duh.
