Might need a new computer, mine are slow, and Windows is pretty hack-able even with a costly but necessary antivirus/firewall, so I thought it would be good to figure out how to transition to a free and more secure Linux operation system and save the cost of a virus scanner.

Mainly use windows for two specific apps: password management program and Excel which doesn't run on Linux. This has kept me on Windows for a long time. That said there are two solutions that should help me with these. For password mgmt there are two good online options: Lastpass and Bitwarden. I ended up using both password systems. And for the Excel issue, while not awesome, there are Google sheets.

I also have a Mac circa 2009. From a hardware perspective it's a little slower than the Windows laptop, but much more elegant design. It had a Mac OS on it and was VERY slow and buggy. It had crossed my mind to donate the laptop because I figured it was done with any possible quality use. Then I installed Ubuntu, a free Linux operating system on it and upgraded the ram to 4gb. It is 100% usable, a lot faster than the Mac OS previously running on the laptop and likely more secure.

I have been, transitioning the passwords to Lastpass, Bitwarden and using Google sheets now. I'll upgrade the Windows laptop to Ubuntu once I fully transition.

I figure this saved me about $500 and also reduced the waste of just getting rid of my old laptops.

Cheers
