Yesterday I was working about four hours from home. I got done early and decided to go home. Checked out of the hotel and my car was on E so I went to fill up. Debit Card doesn't work. Try my credit card. Also doesn't work. Drive to another gas station. Again, neither card works.

Then I get a text from my wife that her debit card doesn't work and the reason is that Visa's systems are down.

At this point I'm in a panic. I have no branches of my bank nearby. My car is on E. I can't go to the ATM. I can't get a hotel room. I can't buy anything.

In a panic I dig through my wallet and thankfully find my Capital One MasterCard that I never use and could have very easily not been there after a wallet Purge. I've never in my life had a debit card not work and I've been using them for 20 years. So I'm able to use the card and get the hell out of there.

That's why from now on I'm going to carry enough cash to get me home. Your debit card could stop working at any moment and you could find yourself stranded, sleeping in your car.
