TL;DR: Use a cookie/baking sheet instead of the overpriced pans.
I recently bought an old house that has been having some dripping issues due to the Midwest cold. While we do have water alarms down, I wanted to also prevent the water from damaging anything before we could get to it (especially if we weren't home to hear the alarm).
I looked around for mats and trays specifically designed for this purpose and noticed that they're 10x more expensive than they need to be. The metal ones especially were just oversized cookie sheets. So, that's what I put in instead - a large cookie/baking sheet (with the water alarm inside). We opted to pay a few dollars more for ones with a higher lip, just in case.
Cost for Special Pan: $40-$100
Cost for Large Baking Sheet: $8
Cost for All Sinks: $24 (rather than $120)
Hope this idea helps some of you save money on a very necessary house item. :)
