My wife and I are both federal workers living in the greater Washington DC area. Despite both of us temporarily losing our income, we're going to be fine, especially now that they've confirmed we will be payed eventually (as long as we don't murder each other after being together 24/7 for so long).

But holy shit. For those of you who don't live in the region, the local news here is non-stop with stories of people who are basically devastated by the temporary deferral of a paycheck. People are lining up at food banks. People are putting their kids on free/reduced lunch. People are holding bake sales.

These are people earning between $50,000 - $100,000 per year.

Owing only tiny fraction of what most Americans pay for healthcare

Our employer actually contributes money to our 401(k)s.

We are college-educated. Many (if not most) of us have post-secondary degrees.

Why is this so widespread? Why are so many college-educated people making this much money living paycheck to paycheck? Holy shit, if federal workers are this screwed, how bad are regular peoples' finances??
