I’ve got some new health and financial goals this year. Both involve eating beans! Long the economical staple food, beans are a symbol of frugality and a healthy way to crowd some meat (which is expensive and less healthy) out of the diet. So, I’m buying dry beans from the grocery and trying out recipes.

Prices of dry beans vary widely. So I thought I’d ask: where do you get dry beans at rock bottom prices? The low prices from online wholesalers is great, but I’m also wondering what the loss leader price is, and who does beans as a loss leader?

Some places sell them north of $2 a pound. I just paid a dollar a pound for pork shoulder! Pintos can be found for cheap, one place sells it $13 for 20lb.

Also, what accounts for differences in price across types of beans. Is it protein content or what?
