We get regular pool maintenance from a local company. I got a voicemail yesterday letting me know there's been a billing discrepancy with our account and to give them a call back. Finally was able to talk to them today and the person on the phone explained our account was supposed to be on auto-pay but it wasn't properly set up after the first pool cleaning.

This is not a "hey, your card declined and we need our money" situation. They literally haven't been charging us and just now noticed. The lady I talked to on the phone had to go in and physically calculate our total because it wasn't shown on our account. She did some math and told us it's $924 and apologized, letting us know she understood it was a large total and that we could do a payment plan. I told her I'd need to speak with my fiancé and would call back.

My fiancé has since told me this is a sign to cancel with them. We do feel that this is screwed up considering we believed this was being charged to a credit card we regularly pay on. Back-paying on a plan + paying for the current cleaning is frustrating as we're working on our finances this year. My fiancé does feel like they could come after us for it and we don't want to risk any credit impact and/or court, but they don't have our social so I'm not sure how this would escalate.

I believe our next step is to request a detailed breakdown of charges they're requesting and then make sure I can't find those charges anywhere on any credit card statements, but I'm not sure where to go from here and if we should even be paying for this. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

EDIT - have already spoken to the company, cancelled, got a statement of charges, verified they're unpaid, and are on a payment plan because we don't feel like tying up the ~$900 immediately. Thanks to all for the advice and to those of you that love to condescendingly scold on this sub - don't ever change lol. You are golden.

SECOND EDIT - to the people who have encouraged me to self-maintain the pool, you are super helpful and don’t ever change.
