So, I have been in financial turmoil for a while now. I'm 22 years old and have been in debt since I turned 18. All of my debt is due to medical bills that my insurance has not covered and I have not been able to cover myself. I am on Medicaid now which covers almost all of my expenses. When I was 17, I developed a seizure disorder and an extreme migraine disorder that required me to see multiple doctors and have many ER visits which I had no control over. The debt kept coming in, but it was hard for me to work because of these issues. After seeing all the debt piling up, I forced myself to work full-time in an attempt to work on repaying everything, but the highest I have ever made a year has been 20k which after all other bills wasn't even close to enough to help. My conditions have been getting worse, and I make a little over half of that now currently. I want to pay off the debt I have, and I do pay the minimum on a few, but I really can't afford much more. My credit is trash, and I just got a letter in the mail from the Department of Revenue saying that I have two medical bills from a hospital that have been sent to them for collection for $10,000 and that I have to be in contact with them to pay the full amount in 10 days or they will begin taking my check and taxes if I don't. They have been on holiday since I received it, the dates that the 10 days fall into are Dec. 23rd - Jan. 3rd so now I have 2 days to call, and I work both the 2nd and 3rd of January. It goes without saying that I do not have $10,000 on hand. I'm sure they would set up a payment plan, but I'm not sure how much that would be. I pay consistently and am always on time on all of my other expenses, but after all my other bills and the few medical bills I can afford I don't have much money left. I only pull $13,000 a year at the moment before tax so I don't have much to use on anything else. I owe quite a bit in medical expenses and I can't get caught up so I was considering filing for bankruptcy but have always heard that wasn't a good thing to do at my age. I know it hurts your credit but mine is trash anyway... I can't afford to pay these bills, and I don't know what to do, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
