Hello DIY'ers I'm a newish member who has some basic repair skills but very little in-depth DIY knowledge. I have a house in southern CA with poor gutter drainage and I have some spots (4 edges) where there is wooden trim next to/below the gutters/roof overhangs that have had a lot of rain wash over them in the recent downpours. As a result there are about 4 corners that are partially rotten with some soft spongy spots that I can just put a screw driver into. Now replacing the large wooden trim pieces around my roof is not financially feasible right now but these spongy spots appear to be fairly small: About 2 inches wide, 4 inches high and (I'm guessing) maybe 1 inch deep. I would like to dig them out now that it's warmer and dryer again and treat them/fill them with something. (I will add pictures soon). Can I get any advice for how to repair to stop the spread?*UPDATED WITH SOME PICTURES*: I'm hoping these help provide better context. Provided are 3 pictures of 2 of the areas. The red areas are the the approximate height and width of the rot (the patches might be a bit taller when I start digging (the same pictures without the messy red boxes are also provided). These boards are about 8-10" tall and approx 1.25" or 1.5" thick and run all along/under the roof overhang. LINK: http://bit.ly/2RTnjQ3 1) What is the best way to stop the spread of the rot? I assume I need to dig out the rotten edges/spots and sand or dremel the edges until I'm back to clean/dry wood?Question 2) Do I need to "overshoot" and remove a larger piece than the rot appears to touch just to be safe?Question 3) After the rot has been remove am I supposed to fill it with a patch compound and just sand and paint?Thank you in advance! via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2DHTMjp
