I moved into a new apartment a few months ago that only had incandescent bulbs. I've been replacing them with LEDs as they've gone out because in my mind throwing away a perfectly working bulb was like throwing money away. I've noticed the price for LED bulbs has gone down drastically in the last few years, so I was curious if it would save money to buy all new LEDs and just throw out the incandescent. My local grocery store sells a four-pack of 60w (6w) LEDs for $4.99, so $1.25 per bulb. I did some calculations, and for the about of time, I use the lights, each of the incandescent bulbs was costing me about $1 a month in electricity. An LED would only cost me $0.10 a month. That would mean that after only about a month and a half; I would break even on my investment and just be saving money.

As counter-intuitive as it felt, me being too "cheap" to throw away working bulbs to buy new ones was costing me almost $15 a month.

(I did the same calculations to see if it would be worth it so replace the 13 watt florescent bulbs at my brothers house, but the ROI on those was over a year, so not quite as worth it.)
