I wanted to make a post about paint brushes because they are often thought of as items with a limited number of uses. However, if you clean and store them properly, they can last a lifetime. I purchased a basic set of brushes when I started remodeling my house a little over ten years ago and they are still soft and supple after dozens of jobs. Here are the key points. (This is all for latex based paint).

  • Buy a brush that comes in a reusable cover. Nothing fancy, it's usually just cardboard with some sort of closure mechanism. Just about any middle of the road brush should come with one.
  • When you're finished painting, rinse the brush with warm water until the water runs clear.
  • Once all the paint is removed, use a brush comb to straighten the bristles.
  • Squeeze and shake out the excess water.
  • Put the brush back in its cover while it is still damp. This was the game changer for me as it will keep the brush from losing its shape and becoming a frayed mess.

Here's a video with a few more details.
