Hi all,

I am the kind of person who only uses Comcast for internet. Having moved several times (always opening accounts as a new customer to make sure I get the promotional deals), I've discovered that if you set up your new account over the phone, you can avoid paying almost every fee they would charge you if you signed up online. The best example is the professional installation fee ($60 non-negotiable online). If you simply tell the associate on the phone that you have your own modem and your apartment/house is already up to date (meaning it has new enough cables to work with their system, which most recently inhabited places will have), they will take your word for it and not charge you or force you to book an installation.

The rare exception is of course if you move into a place that has no/very substantially outdated wiring, but in this case you actually may require the professional installation. Or, if you're reasonably handy, you could probably do the work yourself (there are YouTube videos after all) and tell the Comcast associate over the phone that you hired someone to take care of it.
