I work in a Walmart in NJ and they put a notice out mentioning this to all associates. What I got out of it is that the discounted amount you swipe for will now be considered income. Is that correct?

EDIT: Here's what the exact text says in the notice:

"The state of NJ considers any discount given to associates as taxable income. This means all associates who are subject to NJ income tax withholding will pay state income tax on that amount. This includes associate discounts from Walmart, Walmart.com, or any affiliate companies. Only associates who pay state income tax in NJ are affected.

Associates will see this discount savings amount as a line item on their paycheck. Each time the associate or a family member uses their Walmart discount, the amount of the discount will be reported on their paycheck as taxable wages. The associate will then pay NJ state income tax on that amount."

For those wondering what the associate discount is, Walmart offers a 10 percent associate discount.

This dropped shortly after a major minimum wage increase for Walmarts in this area...15.00/hr.
