Earlier today I stopped in a Dollar General for a $1 loaf of sandwich bread. When I walked in, an employee was literally stomping on unopened boxes of cupcakes and ripping open bags of mini-donuts and dumping them in the trash.
I was flummoxed. I asked her what she was doing and she said they were required to destroy dated product. It struck me as so wasteful as to be obscene, especially since there are local food banks that would have accepted out-of-date, boxed pastries and snack cakes. I turned around and walked out without my bread. It's been an hour and this is still on my mind.
When did we - as a society - begin destroying food instead of offering it to those who are hungry?
