Hello. I have had some tax troubles the past few years. I had 2 tax returns audited and ended up owing around $10,000 which I’ve paid back about $7300 of via a payment plan.

I take care of my girlfriend and her 2 kids financially. Neither child is biologically mine. The fathers provide no support of any kind. I pay the rent for the house they live in, all the utilities, the kids clothes, activities, and any medical bills that aren’t covered by their Medicaid. I pay for roughly 75-80% of their living expense.

She receives some food stamp benefits in addition to the Medicaid... surprisingly even after informing them I pay for everything for her when she initially applied for it.

Does this sound like I would be able to claim all 3 of them as dependents? To me it feels like I should be able to. We have had this situation going on for a few years and due to my tax troubles I’ve not wanted to rock the boat and claim them and cause more troubles for myself. She is also worried about it messing up her medicaid and food stamp benefits. She would be alright without the food stamps but Medicaid is something they definitely need. I don’t have health insurance because it’s simply nothing I can afford for myself much less front the bill for all of them.

I don’t make a lot of money at about 60k per year before taxes and claiming them would take me from owing another $1500 to the irs to actually getting a return of about $4000.

Maybe I should stop filing my own taxes and go to a professional? I am just curious if anyone here has any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks.
