Thanks to u/jtek55 for the design inspiration, I was able to construct a Battleship Workbench over the course of a week. This thing is bomb-proof and was a "blast" to build.Sorry for the lack of picture in my post, but this is intended to be a modification to Jtek55's very detailed writeup: http://bit.ly/2M89M0O story short; just moved into my first house and needed to clear the garage floor of tools (and also really wanted an awesome workbench). My objective was to combine tool storage with a solid working area since I mostly do smaller woodworking projects and handyman stuff around the house. I wanted to use vinyl tile as the surface but ended up going with "weathered" oak wallboard. It's not perfectly flat or smooth but it was pretty cheap and sturdy, and gives it some character. Another shoutout to u/jtek55; after the frame is complete, there is a lot you can do with this design. I decided on a compressor cubby, recessed miter saw platform, and a mini-fridge area because why not. I attached a power strip in the back of the compressor cubby, which is controlled by a TP-link switch and google home (which is mounted on the wall out of the frame).Materials:Twelve 2x4sTwo 4'x8' sheets of 1/2" MDF2 1/2" deck screwsBrad nails - Attaching MDF to frame1/2" bolts, nuts, washers, and lock washers - for the cornersWood GluePower StripTurnbuckles and eye hooksSix 3", 175lb caster wheelsStarting with the 8'x3' frame, I used 2 1/2\" deck screws for joining the lumber and 1/2\" bolts on the 4 corners for added rigidity. There are 3 crossbeams under the MDF for support, and I added 3 more to the top to support the bench surface.I added a shelf on the long side and started to try out some leftover flooring for the bench surface. I ended up scrapping that idea since it didn't sit flush with the miter saw platform. I also used leftover MDF to enclose the short side, which will eventually hold the mini-fridge.Finished product. After painting the frame and adding three coats of polyurethane to the oak surface, it is complete. Get ready for A LOT of sanding if you use the oak wallboard. Some simple deck screws for tool mounting and a Corona stool from Goodwill really rounded it out well. The cooler will hang out in there until the mini-fridge goes back on sale; it is presently secured with the turnbuckles and eye hooks. via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2SRE8XV
