I kinda go back and forth with myself on this.
Pros of living in a simpler time:
- Social media and smart phones aren't things.
- Jobs are more straightforward (shopkeeper, farming, manual labor, etc).
- To me, things would just seem more real. No screens, you actually play with your friends outside, etc.
- If you go back far enough, your life isn't mortgage by a bank with loans for your house, transportation, or education.
I'm sure I romanticize things about past times, but in general, I see parts of it as simpler than today.
Pros of living simply in a modern time:
- Modern medicine
- If you have a more complex job that pays more but choose to live simply, you can save a lot and retire early. Or if you live simply enough, you can make do with a more straightforward job that doesn't pay as much.
- Technology can help with simple living (email/text/phone vs. writing a letter and mailing it, driving/biking vs. horse/walking)
- Depending on how far back you consider "simpler", modern times have things like indoor plumbing, electricity, etc.
