I was thinking about this today. I felt like such a champ for making my own pea soup (so easy! so cheap!) until I realized the basic canned pea soup wasn't a whole lot more expensive. It got me thinking about other things I've DIYed before that didn't seem to be worth the effort when considering cost and quality of pre-made/built stuff (yogurt, acorn patties and soap to name a few).
What things have you run into that are ABSOLUTELY not worth the effort, and what things were you surprised by how much better they were to DIY?
My example - Seitan is pretty easy and super nutritious, but everyone keeps buying the stuff from the store that costs an arm and a leg. Also you can make your own cologne/perfume with essential oils and a carrier oil for next to nothing.
