I am an essential federal employee, meaning I am expected to work during this government shut down here in the US.
I have a small emergency fund and since Christmas shopping has just passed by I have an even smaller amount of normal budget funds too... but I don’t think it can keep me afloat for very long- maybe 2 months, and it seems like we’re going to be shut down for a while.
What can I do? I’m still expected to put in the 60 hours I’m contracted for, but I won’t receive a paycheck for any of the work for the foreseeable future. All the PTO I had scheduled has been canceled, and they want me to pick up shifts for the non-essential staff that has been furloughed.
