My wife and I just booked our trip to Oahu, Hawaii - with free flights with American Airlines miles (in true r/Frugal fashion, saving us $1,100 each) - and booked a $74/night private-room hostel at a total cost of $518 for the week, taxes included. This will be our first frugal vacation, and our target is to spend $100/day for a total cost of $1,200 for the week including lodging.
All was well until I got to the final page of paying for the hostel where it says "Hostelling International Non-Members Please note that if you are a non-member that a small additional fee (surcharge) must be paid on arrival at the property." I highly doubt it's a meaningfully expensive fee considering the cost of the hostel is negligible, so even if it was 10% it wouldn't be the end of the world. But has anyone had experience booking a hostel with Hostelling International as a non-member and can tell me about what the fee was?
