I need to mount a baby gate at the top of some stairs, but the banister unfortunately does not line up with the stud. I’ve decided to mount two 2x4s to studs horizontally and then will mount the gate to each beam.Without knowing the width of the drywall between the 2x4s and the studs, how long should the screws be to mount the beams securely without risking damaging wiring/etc?
