I like to gather useful, or potentially useful things on the road side to repair and use.
My wife is never pleased with me when I bring things home.
This spring someone was moving and giving away a non-functional generator. I took it, along with a telescope!
I fixed it up. I also fixed an awesome BBQ up last year. Both items were fixed for under $50 and less than two hours my time total.
Throw in a thrift store water purifier and ancient coleman camp stove I found decade plus ago for $7.
So we've now been three days without power and I expect four days more at least. This generator has kept our fridge cold, led lights on for ambiance, and charges the phones. (I've even been able to light the tree!) The stove and BBQ have fed us every meal and coffee, with some help from my 18 year old backpacking stove to quickly boil water. Thankfully I don't need the water purifier.
Oh all the water has been boiled in pots from roadside shopping. All electricity carried in extension cords and octopus from the roadside as well.
My wife is now glad she has such a resourceful husband.
