The JBL Go (2) and the Sony SRS-XB10 catch my eye. While I'm not too eager to drop more money on electronics this shopping season, I do think a portable speaker is a fun alternative to carrying around a pocket radio (which I enjoy too, and I don't like using headphones or earbuds). I have portable computer speakers, but those are still not so "portable" and require a USB power source (they sound amazing). But, I digress.
I need to know how long the battery lasts over the years (i.e. charge cycles). For example Apple optimistically expects their products to have 500 or 1000 cycles before the rechargeable battery declines to 80% (which is great!). I don't know if JBL can expect something like that, especially since the speakers are only worth $30 USD. I understand that a single cycle plays music for five hours, which is reasonable. I suppose after the battery dies then I can use the speaker on the computer with a USB cable.
For reference, let's say that for $30, I personally expect it to last at least three years with a reasonable battery charge. That amortizes to $10 per year, which is fine. It sounds like I'm whining over $30, though I do think that's fair because unlike most of the electronics I buy the portable speaker is in the "optional" territory.
Basically, how quickly does the battery lose its luster? I'm sure the logic here extends to other portable speakers.
