Credit cards in my name, utility company accounts in my name, hospital bills, home rentals, selling my ssn for tax/dependent purposes, you name it: my mother did all of this scandalous shit to her kids, family members, and anyone else she could con into being her "friend" for a few weeks.
I've been on my own for 10 years and have had all 3 of my credit reports frozen almost the entire time (plus entities like the nctue and innovis). Somehow this has been enough to keep all of her disgusting habits at bay, at least when it comes to me, even though her addiction and money problems are worse than ever. On a daily basis I'm left worrying when the other shoe will drop with her again.
Having my credit reports frozen is great and all, but isn't this useless when it comes to entities that operate on a "no credit check" and/or "no credit required" basis? It's my understanding that none of this stops these entities from reporting to my credit report after she defaults and that freezes only stop entities from checking my credit report that they may or may not bother requiring in the first place.
Example: my grandma has endured the same crap, put the same credit freezes in place, and my mom managed to get a car financed in her name at some skeezy "no credit check" auto lot.
So seeing as I cannot do anything about the fact that she knows my personal information because she is my mother (regardless of the fact that I've been estranged since I was 17), how do I stop her from opening accounts with unscrupulous creditors who dont even require access to my credit reports in the very first place? I've talked to the SSA and they said that I cannot change my SSN until it happens again and I of course go to the cops now that I'm an adult.
