Complete newbie DIYer here. I am going to be putting up a shelf in my gf's condo. I've measured out the length, height required and marked the studs. What I'm unsure of is if I've got the tools to do the job or whether I need to make some purchases. As this condo is a newer build, the wall is drywall, with studs being 14-16 inches apart (Memory fails me exactly to which it is right now). My one concern is that as I was marking the width with my studfinder, one of the studs (Out of a total of 4 that I found) appears to be at least double the width of the others.Would this suggest that the wider beam I came across would be of another material and if so, what is recommended as an option to prepare for that? The shelf will be pine and is intended to hold books and other things which is why I felt it would be smartest to mount it on studs vs just the drywall.Shelf Dimensions: 67 inches long and 11-12 inches wide. I have yet to find brackets I like as well but do understand that the mounting bracket does need to be 9 inches at minimum to safely support everything.Tools I have on hand: Various screwdrivers, very basic and most likely weak drill and various drill bits. What I'm entirely clueless on: -Given the above info, what mounting screws and other hardware is recommended? -Is pre-drilling necessary and if so, what size drill bits in relation to screws being used to mount the shelf?I'm sure there's more I've missed here. Thanks everyone for reading in advance. via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2QSyS9w
