Hello all!
Not sure if this needs to be crossposted to FIRE or Relationship help, but I'll start here.
Here are the basics-
Me - 27 , 100,000K USD a year, no debt
Her - 24 , 45,000K, no debt
We currently rent my parents house from them for $400/month while they live in a house outside the country. It is a beautiful yet outdated house in an amazing neighborhood, virtually rent free. To put it in perspective, this particular house would sell for about $1,000,000, and a regular 3 BR 22000 SQF home in this neighborhood would sell for $600,000+.
While currently everything is going our way financially, My fiancé is dead set on buying a house pretty soon after we get married (2019), one that we can raise a family in.
Under normal circumstances, I would agree, however, I can't even begin to wrap my head around how far back this could set us financially from where I won't to be, right now and in the future.
My parents (mom) can be difficult at times, but they have given us free reign to do whatever we want with the house, right now and in the future.
I've always had a vision that because of how fortunate we are to live cheap right now, we should really take advantage of our situation and continue to invest/save our money for the next 7-10 years, perhaps even buy 1-2 income producing rental homes, and then settle down into our dream home.
My Fiance (IMO) doesn't seem to quite see the big picture yet, and I don't really know how to explain to her it would just kill me mentally to go out and buy a house we can afford ($350,000-$450,000), 1 hour from both of our places of work, just so she can fulfill her dream of owning a home she can furnish herself for our future family.
TL;DR
-We make a combined 140-160K
-Pay $400/month to live in my parents house
-I want to stay in this house for 7-10 years, save/invest money, then buy dream home
-She wants to buy home asap
-How can I explain to her that that in the long run this will set us back years
Thanks!
