I've recently moved from Ireland to California and, honestly, the US tax system is a mystery to me. I've been in this job for USC since August now, and every month I have received the same amount of money in my payslip, as expected. I was paying roughly $300 in federal withholding. This month my federal withholding jumped up to $1300.
Because of the visa I am on, I am only allowed to claim one allowance, which is what I'm doing. I just checked my W4 which is automatically generated by Glacier as I'm a non-resident alien and my allowances are still at one, last updated in late September.
I've emailed the university about this but the building is closed until the 1st January.
Am I missing anything as to why my federal withholding exploded this month?
