So my bike got stolen the other day, which left me thinking about the costs of replacing it, and how much value cycling gives me when travelling in London. Here is my approximate breakdown (feel free to point out any anomalies in the comments).

Cost of my bike: £620 (inc luminous jacket, bag, lights etc). Cost of bike repairs over the years: £240 (this is an approximate amount, and it's probably less than this).

I live in zone 3, and the cost of a zone 3 travel card is £1600 a year, or £133 per month. Whilst I don't have a travel card I do still occasionally use buses, tube and overground in London. My average spend per month (over the last 6 months) is £20.90.

So if I'd had a travel card for the last 3 years I would have spent £4800. Instead I've only spent approximately £752 on tube / bus / overground (£20.90 x 36) and £860 on my bike (inc repairs and gear).

This is a bigger saving than I thought to be honest, so I'm feeling pretty happy, and I would definitely recommend cycling as a way of saving money and keeping fit.
