My wife and I bought a house and during the inspection the inspector noticed that a beam holding the deck up was rotting out (unrelated to this post). We had several contractors come out and estimate repairs and one of them mentioned that our deck stairs were not built very well and suggested we add joist hangers to reinforce them.I finally bought some joist hangers (figure 3) and I'm trying to figure out how to get the best support out of them on the deck. What I've noticed is that the joist sits a little lower than the rim joist (see figure 1: it's about a 1/4"). I don't really want to disassemble the deck to install this stuff but, if that's the best way, I'll probably do it. I've researched a bit about fasteners and I'm planning on getting those Exterior Grade SD Structural-Connector Screws that Tim talks about in this "AsktheBuilder" video.Mostly, I'm just curious if you redditors know of a "best way" to accomplish adding these hangers to my existing deck. Thanks!Figure 1.
