I do needlepoint off an on when I want a mindless, sedentary hobby to do. It's cheap, doesn't take up a lot of space (everything fits in a single sewing basket), and I can drop it whenever I want (spring!) and pick it up again later (winter!).

Problem is, my eyes are getting older and I needed more light. I was shopping around and I liked the little needlepoint/craft lights you could place around your neck, but I couldn't bring myself to purchase one. Then, inspiration struck!

I pulled my headlamp out of my backpacking gear, and put it around my neck instead of around my head. It tilts up and down and has several different light intensities, so I can aim it exactly where I need it. Perfect! I'm not much for winter camping, so it sits unused for most of the season. It can live in my sewing basket for now :)

TL;DR: A headlamp makes an excellent alternative to the around the neck style craft lights.
