Hi all,

I’ve recently started reading this subreddit and I find it very informative, thanks for that. I have a genuine question on index funds and I hope you can clarify my doubts.

I understand that index funds offer a great way to diversify, don’t require too much research and are also efficient from a brokerage fee standpoint. I’ve read about folks with a long investment horizon, investing all their pension and monthly savings in ETFs.

What makes them better than bonds or saving accounts? What is the literature or what are the assumptions behind the expectation that in the long run markets will go up? What is the minimum investment horizon from which index funds start making sense?

Thank you!
