I received a letter a few months ago from a debt collectors that stated I owed a little under £300 from 2012.
I actually lived abroad at the time it stated that this balance was defaulted.
The debt appears to be originally owed to my bank, who, while i was abroad, split into two separate banks. The account i had with them was moved to one of the newly formed banks. I have spoken to them and they have no record of me owing this balance.
A month or so ago i sent a letter (template i found online) that disputed their claim and asked them to provide more information.
I have just received a letter that states;
"As we have not been able to provide all details specific to your dispute we have marked your account as unenforceable, meaning we will not pursue any legal action, and informed our client to remove any reporting on your credit file however the account remains outstanding, and we want to work with you to agree an affordable arrangement based on your individual circumstances."
So, it sounds to me like they cannot provide enough information to make me pay them. I think they are clutching at straws to recover whatever they can from me, which, if true, seems like a slimy practice and (maybe?) illegal.
Can someone shed some light on my obligations here? has anyone seen a similar situation?
Thanks in advance!
