I was in Old Navy and noticed their activewear has some pretty nice and cheap stuff, like this grid fleece hoodie: https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=347543012&cid=1119873&pcid=1119856 It looked and felt just like the Patagonia R1 which is all the hotness in active winter layers (https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-r1-regulator-fleece-pullover/40109.html) and even has the same ~92% polyester, ~8% spandex material makeup as the Patagonia. Even at the full $40 retail price the Old Navy fleece looks like a pretty nice deal (vs. $130+ for the Patagonia version!), but I'm sure it will be cheaper with the holiday sales that happen soon. If you want a solid winter layer for activities these grid fleeces are awesome--they're warmth with great breathability. They don't really resist wind at all though so you might need a wind jacket over it if the conditions require it.
