Never had credit card, only debit. How do I get my credit score as high as it can go as soon as possible?

What card is advised? I know I can't get a good one yet, since all the good ones require you have excellent credit. When my credit gets high enough, and I get a better card, what do I do with the first card? Do I cancel it or keep it without using?
