Back story: I'd like to upgrade my 90s tech thermostat with a thermostat I can update/monitor with my phone (and maybe control with alexa). I did some sleuthing over the weekend and while my furnace (I live in Seattle, no AC needed 51 weeks of the year, so no AC...) has a "C" terminal, only 3 wires run all the way from the furnace (buried in the basement) to the only thermostat in the living room on the ground floor - R, W, and G. Lathe and plaster construction make it pretty easy to accept that I won't be running new wiring for this project.Nest claims to only need 3 wires (it will micro-cycle the furnace to recharge its internal battery as needed per the documentation). I've found some comments online about this being a less than ideal situation (wifi timeouts, some furnaces don't react well to micro-cycling, etc). I'm curious what others in DIY have experienced with this setup?Alternately - ecobee has 'remote room monitors'. It would be pretty easy to hook up an ecobee in close proximity to the furnace, but is it possible to rely upon a remote sensor as the sole/primary? It's typically quite a bit colder in the basement (there's only 1 vent for the entire basement).thoughts? Thanks in advance! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2PoTt4E
