So about 6 years ago I got my first career job and decided to buy a house instead of renting an apartment. Smart move as the area I bought has done nothing but build up and has moved housing prices higher.

My mortgage guy was a friend of a friend and recommended I link up with a local insurance agent. I was promptly sold on the fact that she was “independent” and could shop the best deals. So I didn’t question it and always felt like I had someone looking out for me.

Fast forward 6 years and I find out my buddy was paying half the cost I am for auto insurance (even though we drive literally the same year/make/model car and he has a DUI on his record from about 10 years ago). So I was pissed. Got on a reputable insurance companies site and got quoted. Saving $850 a year now by basically cutting out my agent.

I always thought she would be by “inside person” in case something happened. But once I was rear ended by a drunk driver. I called her looking for guidance and was basically told to just deal with their insurance company.

TLDR; my experience is that agents are only out to line their own pockets and you can save a substantial amount by just going direct to a reputable insurer.
