Next year, I have the opportunity to take 6 months off work to basically do what I want with the assurance that my job will be there when I get back. I will not be getting paid during this time, but I have $55,000 USD saved. My question is, should I use that time to travel or to go study full-time for a semester for a Master degree in Statistics to see how I feel about it. My issue is that I don't think I have enough money to do both (I'll be studying in Europe so tuition isn't a problem, but doing both will make for tight budgets). Key points to consider:

  • I've been considering changing fields anyways (I don't use statistics in my current job) so studying full-time would allow me to try it out and see how things go. If I don't like the work involved in the program, I can go back to my job with no issues.

  • I'm currently very unhappy where I'm at in life and need a break. I don't like where I live and the options I have for moving to a different US office at my company are not very exciting.

  • I have always wanted to travel long-term and I have the means to do so. One thing I've considered is traveling and coming back to work to see how I feel. Then after a few months back, I could ask to switch to part-time status and work and study at the same time. But, studying and working at the same time sounds really stressful.

I'm really unsure about what I should do. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be best? Has anyone been in a similar situation before?
