We’re in our early 60s and looking at long term care planning. We’re looking for a second opinion. Our options seem to be buying a standard LTC plan, self-insuring, and/or a LifeCare program at a CCRC. Our advisor thinks we have have enough assets to self-insure, but it’s difficult to understand the risks. The problem with LifeCare is that by the time we’re ready to move into a CCRC, early to mid 70s, we might no longer qualify. We’re a gay male couple, which I’m told actually brings down the cost of LTC policies (due to our shorter male lifespans), living in Massachusetts.

I’m interested in what people think it take to self-insure. I’m also interested in whether people have experience with LifeCare programs as an alternative.
