I delivered my baby back in June. I had the smoothest birth possible with minimal drugs, baby was perfectly healthy. Still with decent insurance I and baby were left with $4200 in hospital bills combined, $2500 and $1700 respectively. (This doesn’t include what I already paid to the OB). Before you plan on paying anything check your itemized bill for errors. Anyways, I finally got around to calling hospital billing today to pay it. They made it tricky to speak to a rep but I finally got a hold of one. The call went like this:

“I wanted to see if there were any discounts available for the bill” She said something about me having to go through the same procedure as everyone else. Then asked as they do “can you pay this bill in full over the phone today?” -I replied “No” “Can you pay this bill if we extend the due date 30 days?” -No “Can you pay this bill in 2 monthly installments?” -No “Can you pay this bill in 6 monthly installments” -No “Can you pay this bill in full if reduced to $2400?” -No This went on until she wouldn’t go any lower which amounted to 75% of the original bill.

I told her to go ahead and ask me the same questions for my daughters bill and she laughed.
TL;DR: never pay the full hospital bill. Hospital prices are bullshit. Universal healthcare now.
