Hi all,
This is my first post on reddit after lurking for a few months.
My husband and I have been making quite a lifestyle change to live more frugally,. We have made and stuck to a budget, and have seen significant savings because of it. But one thing we forgot to include in our budget is laundry. We decided to add it to our budget for December, as we have found we have to keep making ATM withdrawals in order to get it done.
We live in an apartment that has coin-op laundry, $3.50 for a wash and dry. It is a small-loading washer and doesn’t dry particularly well, so we use this for between laundromat runs on the weekend. When I do use the small washer, I end hanging most of my clothes to dry on a standing rack because the clothes don’t dry well and it saves a little money. However, I was thinking of hand washing my work clothing because it is better for the clothes and would significantly reduce the cost of washing. Laundromat prices range from $4.00 for a medium load to $8 for a large load, plus $0.25 per 6 minute drying. We usually end up with 3 medium loads (my clothes, his clothes, sheets and towels). It adds up.
I have seen a few posts that recommend just washing and drying at a laundromat because it is backbreaking work to do a weeks worth of laundry for a whole family by hand. However, I would only be doing our weekly work clothes (which are pretty lightly soiled) and undergarments. We would be taking towels, sheets, sweatclothes , etc. to the laundrymat. We do not have kids either, so it is just us two.
With washing and drying everything, we estimate about $50-60 per month. My estimate with hand washing work clothes would be $20-25 a month.
Thoughts?
